American tennis is thriving, but there's a nagging issue that's been brought to light. It's a problem that has impacted the legacy of players like John Isner, and it's time to address it.
Currently, two American men, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, are ranked among the world's elite, both reaching Grand Slam semifinals and claiming ATP Tour titles. Yet, the last American male to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick, way back in 2003. This dry spell has led to a culture of criticism towards American players who fall short of Slam victories.
But here's where it gets controversial... Mark Kovacs, a renowned sports physiologist, has stepped in to challenge this mentality. He argues that it's unfair to judge players solely on their Grand Slam wins, especially when they consistently rank among the world's top players.
"If you're in the top 20, you're at the pinnacle of the sport. Yet, unless they're winning Slams, we devalue their achievements. It's wrong," Kovacs asserts.
He goes on to highlight John Isner's career, a player who, despite his impressive record and consistent ranking, is often overlooked.
"Isner had an incredible career, consistently in the top 20 for over a decade, and even reached the top 10. Yet, he's not talked about in the same breath as the legends. He doesn't have the Slam titles, but he was an exceptional player. Any junior would be thrilled to have a career like his."
Kovacs believes that American tennis players deserve more recognition for their achievements, especially when they consistently perform at the highest level.
"The problem is, especially in the US, if you're not winning Slams, you're invisible. You don't get the media attention, you're not celebrated as one of the best."
Isner's Grand Slam record is a testament to his dedication and skill. In 59 Slam appearances, he reached the quarterfinals twice and the semifinals once. His closest call was at Wimbledon 2018, where he battled Kevin Anderson in a legendary match that went to a 50-game deciding set.
Despite never winning a Slam, Isner's career is an inspiration. He pushed the boundaries and gave it his all. Doesn't he deserve a little more appreciation from the tennis community?
